The Car Park Opens - 11/11/10
The three-storey below ground car park has a 339 capacity and features the UK’s largest stacking system as well as the country’s first palletless transport technology.
The high-tech scheme works by enabling registered users to deposit their car at one of four transfer garages, where it is scanned and transported vertically to the parking area using an automated lift. One of six palletless conveyor systems is then used to shuttle the car towards an empty parking space, placing it directly on an underground concrete shelf.
On return to the car park, drivers will simply scan in their pass at the transfer garage for their vehicle to be safely returned. The system will even turn the car round, ready for the driver to exit the car park.
The system was manufactured by German company, Wohr, and is designed to accommodate all different vehicle sizes. Widely recognised as one of the safest and most secure public car parking systems available, it is also more energy efficient, reducing the need for the constant illumination and ventilation required in standard underground multi-storey garages.
Leases and short term licences are now available to anyone interested in using The Cube car park. Drivers are required to register for a licence before using the system and can email: Info@thecube.co.uk or call 0121 654 9400 for further information.
Neil Edginton, director of The Cube project, explains, “When we were designing The Cube, we wanted to offer a car park that would be just as iconic and ground-breaking as the building itself, as well as being inherently secure for vehicles and users, so this system is the perfect fit for the scheme. We’re delighted to have the UK’s largest car park stacking system here in Birmingham and we are now opening its doors to people within the city.”
The Cube, which is now build complete and already home to some blue-chip tenants such as Highways Agency, is a landmark destination building set in the heart of Birmingham, bringing office space, apartments, shops, a hotel, restaurant and spa.
As a visionary scheme, The Cube marks a key milestone in the city’s architectural development, building on Future Systems’ iconic Selfridges building and paving the way for Mecanoo’s Library of Birmingham and the redevelopment of Birmingham New Street station.
